Five Essential Lawn Care Tips
Other than taking care of the flowers and other plants, the gardener also has to take care of the lawn. Here are some helpful lawn care tips.
1. There are different zones in the country. Each zone has its particular type of weather. If you live in a zone that is cold most of the time, you might want to plant a cool season lawn grass. This type of grass is ideal for areas that have cold weather because this type can stay green even during winter though it might turn a little brown during late summer.
If you live in an area where it is always hot and warm, you might want to plant a grass that stays green despite the sun shining ever so brightly. This type of grass is the opposite of the cool season lawn grass.
Lastly, if you live somewhere in the middle, you can choose between the two types of grasses. But if want your lawn to look green all year round, you can combine those two types of grasses.
2. To keep your grass healthy, you will need to feed it. What will you feed it? Nothing else but compost. Compost is made from dried leaves, fruit and vegetable peelings and other biodegradable materials and mixed with soil.
Compost is added to the soil to improve its structure as well as its nutrient content. The thickness of compost that you will add to the soil will depend on the type of lawn grass you have. Information about grass feeding is widely available on the net so it is best to read about it in case you don't have any idea about feeding.
3. It may be hard to distinguish weed from your lawn grass but that doesn't mean you should leave the weeds alone to grow and prosper in your lawn. Keep in mind that those weeds will compete for water and nutrients and these can hamper your lawn grass' growth.
Not only that, weeds can also affect the overall appearance of your lawn. That is why it is ideal that you do optimum weed control. To do this, weeding should be done on a regular basis. Nothing beats a well trimmed lawn with no stray weeds sticking out.
4. Lawn grasses grow and if left alone you might end up with a knee high lawn grass. Lawn grasses this long are really not a sight to behold. No one would appreciate a garden that looks more like a forest.
It would be ideal to keep your lawn grass at an ideal height. To achieve this, proper mowing has to be done. Mowing is essential but if done the wrong way mowing can cause the death of your lawn grass.
Most mowers have the tendency to scalp the lawn which is not good because by doing so you will be left with shallow root systems and dying grass. So rather than doing your grass good, you end up harming it. Cut your lawn grass to an ideal height, not too tall and not too short.
5. Your lawn also has to be watered. Like plants, it is ideal to water early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Adequately watering your lawn grass will ensure its health. If you don't have time to water, you can always set up a sprinkler in the middle of your lawn and program it to water the lawn at a particular time.
