Five Rose Plant Care Tips
Most gardeners prefer roses because these flowers are not that hard to grow or maintain. Here are some tips that might help you grow roses in your garden.
1. When choosing a stock of rose to plant, choose a two year old or field grown stock to ensure that these will be able to live once planted on the ground. If you have doubts, you can always go for potted roses.
Most gardeners prefer this because it can easily be transplanted to another pot or to the ground. In addition, the survival rate is higher so you have more chances of having the rose garden you've always wanted.
2. For your roses to grow and be healthy, you must plant it in ideal soil; the kind of soil suited for roses. Plant your roses in an area where it is sunny and well drained. Soaking the roots in water will cause it to rot and the roses will die.
To facilitate drainage you can put small rocks and pebbles at the bottom of the plant hole then cover it with soil mixed with the right amount of fertilizer. Then create a mound in the middle of the hole and place the rose stock in the middle of mound. Use the slopes as guides for the roots while you are spreading them. When you are done, fill the hole.
3. To aid the growth of your roses, you will have to feed them. Yes, roses and other plants have to be fed too. Feeding means adding fertilizer or compost to your roses. The fertilizers and compost increase the nutrient content in the soil. Because of that, your roses now have more nutrients which can help them grow and stay healthy.
The time to feed your roses will depend on its type. Some roses have to be fed at a particular season like early spring, late summer and so on. Also, when feeding your roses, you have to follow strict instructions with the use of fertilizers. Too much fertilizer can harm your plant, while too little will defeat the purpose of feeding them.
4. Feeding may help your roses grow, but these also need water to survive. The reason why drainage is created or why roses need to be planted on well drained soil is because these don't need too much water. Not needing too much water is not synonymous to sprinkling.
When watering roses, soak the soil in six to eight inches of water. You don't have to worry about putting too much water if there is proper drainage or if the rose is planted on a well drained soil. If you live in a hot area, the more you have to put more effort in watering your roses.
5. Other than feeding and watering, you also have to protect your roses from pests and insects that eat away your beloved plant. Roses with diseases are not nice to look at. The best way to deal with this problem is prevention. To keep these insects and pests from getting their hand on your roses, you will have to spray your plant with chemicals that keep those insects away.
